Students at Oak Knoll have a weekly lesson in art from the art specialist. They work with and explore a wide variety of media. Strong emphasis is given to drawing and sharpening observation skills. Students also learn many different techniques, such as basic perspective, composition, and color application. The children learn about and celebrate the arts of different cultures throughout the year. Student art work is displayed at the Fine Arts Show during the Spring Open House.

Our music department follows the Orff philosophy, which incorporates the spoken word with singing, movement and instrument playing as learning tools. We offer two programs to students at Oak Knoll:
-
Kindergartens through 3rd grade have 1-2 periods of instruction in classroom music, which emphasizes rhythm, melody, harmony, and the form and expressive qualities of music. Recorders are introduced in 3rd grade.
-
Students in 4th and 5th grades have 2 periods of either classroom music, orchestra or band instruction provided by District specialists. Students from these programs perform at two concerts during the year.
Technology
Oak Knoll incorporates the use of mobile laptop carts on a regular
basis. The mobile cart is brought to the classroom and each student is
able to access their own computer. This
allows the students to conduct online research for special projects,
word process papers for various subjects, prepare presentations, etc. Making use of the laptop carts enables each teacher to integrate technology into every subject.
Science
The Oak Knoll science program is a hands-on, experiential based program that teaches the specific concepts, knowledge and skills outlined in the California Content Standards. We have designed a sequence of earth, life and physical science topics providing students the opportunity to learn by doing laboratory investigations and experiments, solving problems, researching supplemental texts, and receiving direct instruction. The emphasis is inquiry, asking meaningful questions, and conducting careful investigations.
In addition to acquiring knowledge and vocabulary essential to the units they are studying, as a child leaves Oak Knollās fifth grade he/she can:
- Develop a testable question.
- Plan and conduct a simple investigation based on a student developed question.
- Identify the dependent and controlled variable
- Select appropriate instruments and make quantitative observations
- Record data using appropriate graphic representations and make inferences based on those data.
- Draw conclusions from scientific evidence.
- Write a report of an investigation that includes conducting tests, collecting data or examining evidence, and drawing conclusions.
Units of study include:
-
Kindergarten - Trees, Wood, Animals2x2
- Grade One - Solids and Liquids, Weather, Plants/Animal
