February Lifeskill - Self-Discipline

Book: Teammates by Peter Golenbock

Teammatesteammates is the amazing story of Jackie Robinson and Peewee Reese.  Jackie Robinson was an amazing baseball player.  More than that, he was a man of amazing self-discipline.  As the first African American to play in what had been an all-white league, he endured a lot of hateful and cruel things.  Read this article about how important self-discipline (or control) is later on in life.

How do you help your children learn self-discipline?  Teach them to wait for things.  If they want dessert immediately after dinner, have them wait 15-30 minutes before receiving it.  Teach them how to hold on to their allowance and buy a larger item, rather than spending it right away on something small.  Every time you have them wait for something, you are teaching them self-discipline.

One area children also need to practice self-discipline is expressing their anger.  Talk with them often about times when they reacted instead of thought through how to handle a difficult situation.  Role play with them so that the ideas are cemented into their brains.

OK SURVEY DEADLINE EXTENDED ONE WEEK!
New and final deadline is Friday, February 3.  This is your best opportunity to tell our principals, teachers and Site Council members your thoughts on Oak Knoll, and we've heard from less than half of our families.  Click here to complete the 2012 Oak Knoll parent survey.  Click here to print a Spanish version of the survey.  Contact David Ackerman or Kim Guthrie with any questions. Thank you!

Announcements from the Office

Reminder to parents: Please do not walk through the parking lot
If you park on the street and walk in to get your child after school, please DO NOT WALK THROUGH THE PARKING LOT. This is dangerous and against school rules. The walkway in front of the parking lot will take you around to the front of the school and have you cross at the crosswalk (near the K playground.) Cutting through the parking lot is NOT a path into the school. Please use the sidewalk and obey the yellow signs.

Thank you,

The Oak Knoll Staff
