Below are the offerings for After School Programs at Oak Knoll School for the Winter of 2012.  There are many great programs from which to choose.

After School Programs Student Conduct Guidelines
All students have the right to be educated in a positive learning environment free from disruptions. On Oak Knoll School grounds and during the After School Program, students shall be expected to 

exhibit appropriate conduct that does not infringe upon the rights of others or interfere with the 
instruction of the After School Program.  Behavior is considered appropriate when students are 
diligent in study, neat and clean, careful with school and vendor property, and courteous and 
respectful towards the After School Program staff, other students and volunteers. Students who 
repeatedly fail to behave after successsive warnings (2) by instructor will be escalated to After School Coordinator and/or Oak Knoll Administration for corrective action and will be asked to leave the After School Program without refund if inappropriate behavior persists.

Pre- Engineering with LEGO®": K-2nd

Have your child become a Play-Well Engineer! Students will build cities, bridges, and motorized cars/planes and explore the many creative possibilities of engineering with the LEGO® system. With access to over 100,000 pieces of LEGO, your child will have the opportunity to build what they have only dreamed of with the support of an experienced Play-Well Engineering instructor to guide them.

Wizbots Creative Robotics Lab:  3rd-5th
Mondays, 3:00 – 4:30.

Robots are simply cool!  And, students have a blast at Wizbots using all of the materials we provide – laptops, LEGO NXT robotics equipment, arts & crafts materials, and unique building supplies – to design, build and program robots from their own imagination. Students work in pairs, and little do they know they are increasing their knowledge in math, science, and design. They also practice brainstorming, collaboration and critical thinking skills.  Small class sizes and knowledgeable staff encourage kids’ unlimited potential!  Information and registration.

 

TGA Golf:  1st-5th

TGA, Premier Junior Golf is bringing the golf course to your school! TGA is the only national at-school, after school golf enrichment program. TGA provides ALL equipment so students need to bring nothing but a smile to each class. Students learn all aspects of golf, from swing fundamentals to the game’s rules, etiquette and life values, while advancing through a 5 Level Program. The TGA program helps build life values through educational concepts that include Math, English, Science, and History. Students starting in the Yellow Level will receive a TGA Hat, TGA Hat Pin, and a TGA Workbook. The class is held in a fun, safe and nurturing environment that builds confidence, focus, motor skills, and self esteem.  Students will be grouped by age and ability levels. Math Problem Solving Skills:  K-5th

A fun and educational class for mathematical problem solving skills! In this course, students will develop logical and mathematical problem-solving strategies to tackle a variety of thought-provoking challenges. Students will work in small groups, as well as individually, to identify strategies for a diverse array of problems and solve them using a logical process. Some of the strategies that students will learn to apply include estimation, drawing graphs and diagrams, process of elimination, and modeling problems as algebraic expressions. By developing a process for problem-solving, from identifying strategies to presenting their solution, students will bring an inquisitive rigor into challenges that they encounter in their daily lives.

Learn through Play!

Get a fun and educational introduction to Chinese language and culture in Chinese for non-speakers.  This class will make conversational Mandarin and Chinese culture accessible and interesting for beginning/intermediate speakers through stories, games, activities, and cultural events.  Students will learn not only conversational skills in this increasingly popularly-learned language, but he relevant cultural context that will cultivate interest and facilitate learning Mandarin Chinese.  Introductory students will discover concepts and patterns in how to communicate with Chinese rather than memorize individual words and phrases.  Reading and writing will be implemented for students who are prepared for the challenge. Students will work in small groups, as well as individually and are challenged to speak in Chinese to the class at every session.

This is a weekday, after school program for aspiring young players.  Combines fundamental skill instruction with organized team competition with the goal of providing an enjoyable and educational after-school athletic event.  Boys and girls of all skill levels are encourages to join.    After School Hoops provides children with an opportunity to improve their overall physical fitness, develop sportsmanship and athletic integrity, and gain an understanding of the game of basketball.

In this class your child will learn the basics of singing – individually and as part of a vocal group – all within a fun learning environment where they’ll explore the basics of rhythm and melody.   The class uses traditional songs, chants and singing games in a systematic way to teach children the basic building blocks of music:  the ability to hear, to feel and reproduce rhythm and melody, to understand dynamics and tempo, and to sing in tune.  Students will begin the basics of reading and writing basic musical notation. Chess: K - 5th

Chess has proven to be an invaluable education aide and teaches children analytical skills that are applicable to many other intellectual pursuits. Bay Area Chess offers a fun environment to develop mental skills for students at all levels.  A typical class consists of instruction followed by a practice game.  Students may be divided into groups based on ability and experience so that each student receives instruction appropriate for his/her skill level.  Bay Area Chess is a non-profit company serving the Bay Area since 2005.

 

stretch.play.yoga:

These fun and non-competitive classes teach yoga poses, cooperative games, breathing and relaxation exercises all within the context of themes derived from yoga principles (i.e.,mindfulness, acceptance, cooperation, trust, confidence, patience, balance). Children gain confidence, self-awareness and concentration skills, along with strength and flexibility within a safe, fun and cooperative environment.  For more information, visit our website. 

 

Peninsula Youth Theater-Drama: 3rd-5th

With the "Play in a Box" program, students will learn the basics of acting, character development, and storytelling while having fun, learning teamwork skills and rehearsing a production. The program will culminate after 10 weeks with a play that will be presented to parents and students. 

  

Intro to Sports: K-2nd

Coach Tim Bowler will be teaching “Intro to Sports” through positive engagement of rudimentary movements through all sports.  Eye-hand coordination skills in Baseball, basketball, soccer, football, badminton, volleyball, kickball, etc.

Tim Bowler is a National Board Certified Physical Education Teacher and coach at Menlo Atherton High School.   He runs the basketball, baseball and flag football clinics for ages 5 – 12 at Burgess Park during the Christmas Holiday and summer breaks.

 

Jim Wiltens’ Secrets to a Super Memory:  4th & 5th

This class adds the fourth R to Readin', 'Ritin', 'and Rithmatic. The fourth R is Remembering. A big chunk of your child’s academic success is based on remembering. From kindergarten to college, tests measure memory. This is a class in "memory literacy"–a universally beneficial skill. Skills are taught with an emphasis on academic subjects: reading comprehension, social studies, foreign language, spelling, science, and geography. These memory skills are based on Jim Wiltens’ book, Memory Smart. Using the techniques learned in this class, students have:

 

·      Memorized all the chapters and main points in a 300 page text book

·      Learned 100 foreign language words in a weekend

·     Met 12 people at a virtual party and greeted those people a year later by name

·        Listed the 43 presidents of the US in order after an hour of study

·      Been able to recite and explain 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution after one hour of study

Jim Wiltens consults to 7 school districts. He is co-owner/director of Deer Crossing Camp Inc. (www.deercrossingcamp.com), a children's summer camp designed to bring out the best qualities in children. Jim has coached championship teams, worked as a research scientist, and is a world-class adventurer

Young Rembrandts is an after school drawing program.  Our step-step drawing method teaches children to break down complex objects into basic fundamental shapes.  As they learn to deconstruct and reconstruct images, the experience, repetition and variety of engaging and relevant subject matter brings t hem to increased levels of mastery in drawing and in life.  We give them all the skills to express their creativity and imagination, We provide all the materials and teach new lessons every week in a positive and nurturing environment, which brings out the best in each child.

Kindergarten:  At Young Rembrandts’ we have created a unique method of drawing that will prepare kindergarteners as learners for the future success in the elementary classroom. We’ll concentrate on skills of drawing and coloring while we develop their fine motor skills, patience, focus, listening and handwriting readiness.

Studio Rincon in Menlo Park is bringing Hip Hop, Beginning Breaking and Beginning Popping to Oak Knoll after school program!

Grades K-2 with Charlotte Orr on Tuesdays 2:50pm - 3:40pm.
A fun hip hop class for kids that enjoy music, dancing and getting some energy out on the dance floor! Students will begin with warm up, learn various techniques and work on a dance routine each week.  Small performance of their dance @ 3:30pm 11/15/11, bring the camera!

Grades 3-5 with JD Dimalanta on Thursdays:  1:35-2:35pm
A fun, fast paced hip hop, beginning breaking and popping dance class.   Small performance of their dance @ 2:20pm 11/17/11, bring the camera!


Think Math: K - 5th

Would you like for your child to have extra time learning math in a way that is challenging and fun? Or do you want to take the fear out of math for them? Help your child learn to their full potential while developing their love of learning! In Fun Afterschool Math, children work with Stanford undergrads that make learning fun and are great role models. We place children into small groups based on what they know and what they need to learn next, which makes our program good both for children who seek to explore new or challenging topics, and for children who need to strengthen their knowledge of math fundamentals. Our program builds confidence, and develops conceptual learning and critical thinking skills. Children normally work in groups of 3-8 children per instructor and use an international math curriculum. Cal Stars Premier Soccer: K-5th

This introduction to soccer course is designed with the novice player in mind. The program’s philosophy is to provide the best learning environment where players can gain experience from professional teaching and coaching while maintaining a safe and fun learning atmosphere. Boys and girls of all skill levels are welcome to join.  The program will introduce the following skills: Dribbling, Shielding, Passing and Receiving, Turning, Individual Defending, Juggling, Heading, and how to proper strike the ball. Moreover, there will be great emphasis on team building, and sportsmanship. Director Henry Arredondo is currently the Varsity Girls Soccer coach at Woodside Priory and also serves Alpine Strikers FC coaching staff.

 

Flag Football: K-5th

Boys and girls will learn the proper fundamentals of Flag Football through drills, skills and games. These clinics are designed to instruct participants in passing, catching, flag pulling and game strategies.  

Tim Bowler is a National Board Certified Physical Education Teacher and Coach at Menlo Atherton High School. He also runs the basketball, baseball and flag football clinics for kids aged 5-10 years old at Burgess Park in the summer and during holiday breaks.

 

 

Easy Spanish: K-5th

Easy Spanish is a Spanish language study program developed specifically for children by Viviana Marchevsky, a native speaker with an extensive background in education and child development.  Through a variety of exciting games and interactive activities the children develop vocabulary and grammar skills in Spanish. No boring or mechanical drills and memorizing words, and homework is optional.  Viviana uses only native speaking experienced instructors, whom she has trained in the Easy Spanish teaching system.


Menlo Park Afterschool Social Group

The social skills integrated playgroup will be facilitated through a carefully designed system of support. Play sessions are tailored to the unique interests, abilities, and needs of the children.  The lead facilitator will bring the players together and encourage engagement in mutually enjoyed play activities that provide opportunities for social interaction. The first step in bringing a group of children together is to enhance the opportunities for them to initiate and incorporate desired activities into socially facilitated play. The key set of principles that will be targeted include monitoring play initiations, scaffolding play, guiding social-communication, play guidance, and fun!
