One Million Lights Challenge
School Wide Service Project
Oak Knoll is coming together to make a difference for children in Kenya. Students are volunteering in order to earn points that will send solar-‐powered, LED lights to children without access to electricity in 5 rural Kenyan schools. We will impact children's education, the environment and health - our goal is 500 lights! Learn more about the schools that will benefit from our solar lights and maybe even donate a light a light here.
What: Students in grades 3-‐5 are volunteering their time at school in order to earn points that will fund clean, safe solar lights for students in Kenya. The solar lights will help 1,000 students in 5 schools to study, live, and play safely after the sun sets.
How: Interested students can sign up to volunteer in a Light Squad to recycle, garden, care for recess equipment, clean up after lunch, or care for school animals. Each job completed is 3-‐6 points. PTO will donate 1 solar light for every 20 points earned, with the goal of 500 total lights.
You can do creative and fun activities at home to increase awareness of solar and global issues. Check out our schools page online at OneMillionLights.org
Why: This experience is a fun way for your students to learn about kids living in the developing world without electricity, benefits of solar energy, what it means to serve others in need, and teamwork.
