This Week Oak Knoll

Madeline Levine, Ph.D., Marin County psychologist and New York Times bestselling author of The Price of Privilege will speak to district parents on Wednesday, March 26 from 7 to 9 pm at Hillview Middle School.

Dr. Levine will share new, consistent and disturbing statistics, e.g., as many as 30 to 40 percent of 12 to 18 year olds from affluent homes in the U.S. are experiencing troubling psychological symptoms.

Childcare: This is an adults only event and childcare will be provided for a fee. Space is limited and must be reserved in advance. More information is available online and in the school office.

This event is generously funded by the PTO Council and the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation.

Science Kids Club's second challenge, "Towers," happens this Thursday, March 13, in Room 32. Bring your Towers and Lunch. Rules are up on the SKC webpage

On April 30th, we've planned a Parent Education event on understanding your child's learning style. It should be a great event and more information will be provided in future newsletters. To plan for the event, we would appreciate you responding to an online survey that will help us understand the best time to schedule the event and potential childcare needs. The survey should only take a few minutes and we would appreciate your feedback even if you cannot attend this session as we could use the guidance for future planning. Please take the time to participate in the online survey.

Parent Education Survey

SAVE THE DATE! There will be a pizza and bowling party for fifth graders and their families on Thursday, April 17th, 3:30-5:30 at Mel's in Redwood City. Cost is $9 per person. More information will be coming later, but if you want to reserve early, please put your check addressed to Julie Kleck, together with information identifying the attendees, in the "Fifth Grade Bowling Party" folder in the PTO box in the offce. When: Wednesdays, March 26th thru June 4th, from 3:00-4:30pm in the multi. Students will learn the basics of acting, character development, storytelling, and theatre terminology while having fun and rehearsing for a show. Sign ups begin on March 3rd at www.oakknoll.eventbrite.com and the cost is $225. Class limited to 15 students. Questions? Contact Wendy Fisher

Oak Knoll's Spring Picnic event is taking place on May 2, 2008, and we could use some help! We need people interested in planning the event, as well as people willing to help run the games at the picnic. This is a great way to get involved with a limited time commitment! Please contact Carey Pickus, or Carol Shelton, if you are interested.

Come check it out! The Sponsor-A-Book cart is overflowing with brand new books just waiting to be donated in someone's honor. It is a perfect way to honor a favorite teacher or favorite student! Many of the selections are recommendations from the experts; our children!! Please stop by the library and take a look at the wonderful books on the cart. This Month's Featured Books:
Cowboy and Octopus, by Jon Scieszka (grades K-3). This book relates the adventures of two unlikely friends in seven brief stories. Carefully crafted collages help to illustrate the text that rings with positive messages about friendship.

Rules, by Cynthia Lord (grades 4-5). This Newbery Honor winner is about a 12 year old girl who longs for a "normal" existence after becoming frustrated living life with an autistic brother.

Pre-orders for the yearbook will be accepted until March 21st. If you do not pre-order, there will only be a limited number available at the end of the year, at the higher price. The book is a must have for the graduating 5th graders so order yours today! More information and an order form are available on the PTO website. FORMS ARE ALSO AVAILABLE IN THE SCHOOL OFFICE. Are you interested in serving on the Oak Knoll PTO Board? Do you know someone that you think would be great on the Board? The Nominating Committee (comprised of Kim Guthrie, Janet Devereux, Annie Peterson, Grace Stewart, and Irene Searles) is working to fill the following positions for next year: vice-president, treasurer, secretary, auditor, communications chair, and resource chair. Summer is Coming! The PTO is pleased to provide information regarding summer camps in the area on www.oakknollpto.org. Specific camp information will no longer be provided in the weekly newsletter but Quick Links will contain a link to camp information for the rest of the school year. Check back to the PTO website often for the lastest additions.

Kaleidoscope Summer Camp is back for a summer safari! Kaleidoscope is a small summer camp for students entering grades K-3 in the fall and is directed by a Menlo Park Elementary School teacher of 22 years. Kaleidoscope puts the fun in summer with small groups, language arts activities related to our safari theme, music provided by Kara Ireland D'Ambrosio that will include movement games and a parent performance on July 10th, outdoor games, and more! ALPINE FC SOCCER ACADEMY SPRING SEASON K-4th Boys and Girls Alpine FC and Success Through Soccer are excited to again work together on our third season of providing high level soccer training to primary aged children in our community. The academy is proud to announce the formation of three new teams. These teams will play in both CYSA and US Club leagues. If you would like to give your child the opportunity to develop their soccer skills here is your chance: WHO: K-4th GRADE Boys and Girls, Woodside Elementary School, 3:30-4:45 pm or 4:45-6:00, Tue. & Thur. starting March 25th (10 week session) plus 5 additional Jamboree Sundays: 4/6, 4/20, 5/4, 5/18, 6/1) The cost is $385.00 for 10 weeks Go to successthro ughsoccer.com for registration information.

Easter Egg Hunt Bring your own Easter baskets and collect candy and goodie-filled eggs. Gerald the Magician will perform after the hunt. The Your children will get to take home a photo of them with the Easter bunny. Delicious breakfast foods and specialty coffee drinks for the adults.
